In September, for the third consecutive year, Scott Adan, Ph.D., S.E., SECB, a Principal with Adan Engineering, was reappointed Steel Subcommittee Chair for the Structural Engineers Association of Northern California (SEAONC).

Dr. Adan has over 20 years of experience as a structural engineer, including investigating existing buildings, designing new buildings, performing earthquake research, and evaluating earthquake risk. He has taught steel design and mechanics of materials at the University of Utah and the University of Washington, respectively.

He has been an active member of SEAONC for the past five years since moving to the San Francisco Bay Area.  Prior to his living in the Bay Area, he was an active member of the Structural Engineers Association of Washington (SEAW), in Seattle.

“Steel Special Moment Frames: Connection Seismic Requirements,” STRUCTURE Magazine, November 2010 http://adanengineering.com/2010/11/steel-special-moment-frames/ Tue, 02 Nov 2010 09:05:40 +0000 http://adanengineering.com/Wordpress/?p=509 The recently published article co-authored by Scott Adan, Ph.D., S.E., SECB of Adan Engineering and Ron Hamburger, S.E., SECB of Simpson Gumpertz & Heger, discusses the seismic requirements for steel special moment frame connections. The connections must be capable of transferring moment and shear forces that can be developed in the beam to the column. As a result of material and system overstrength, these moment and shear forces can be substantially larger than the design forces specified by the building code.

NEHRP Technical Brief No. 2 Receives Merit in Structural Engineering Award for 2010 http://adanengineering.com/2010/06/nehrp-technical-brief/ Wed, 16 Jun 2010 21:15:47 +0000 http://wp.contempographicdesign.com/wp_industry/?p=268 The NEHRP Seismic Design Technical Brief No. 2, “Seismic Design of Steel Special Moment Frames: A Guide for Practicing Engineers” won the SEAONC (Structural Engineers Association of Northern California) 2010 Merit in Structural Engineering Award in the Study/Research/Guidelines category. Co-authored by Ron Hamburger, Simpson Gumpertz & Heger, Helmut Krawinkler, Stanford University, Jim Malley, Degenkob Engineers, and Scott Adan, Adan Engineering, the guide provides information on the development and design of steel special moment frame systems. The guide is intended especially for the practicing structural engineer, though it is also useful for building officials, educators, and students. The focus is to emphasis code requirements and accepted approaches to their implementation. The brief was developed by the NEHRP Consultants Joint Venture (a partnership of the Applied Technology Council and Consortium of Universities for Research in Earthquake Engineering), under Contract SB134107CQ0019, Earthquake Structural and Engineering Research, issued by the National Institute of Standards and Technology.
