The NEHRP Seismic Design Technical Brief No. 2, “Seismic Design of Steel Special Moment Frames: A Guide for Practicing Engineers” won the SEAONC (Structural Engineers Association of Northern California) 2010 Merit in Structural Engineering Award in the Study/Research/Guidelines category. Co-authored by Ron Hamburger, Simpson Gumpertz & Heger, Helmut Krawinkler, Stanford University, Jim Malley, Degenkob Engineers, and Scott Adan, Adan Engineering, the guide provides information on the development and design of steel special moment frame systems. The guide is intended especially for the practicing structural engineer, though it is also useful for building officials, educators, and students. The focus is to emphasis code requirements and accepted approaches to their implementation. The brief was developed by the NEHRP Consultants Joint Venture (a partnership of the Applied Technology Council and Consortium of Universities for Research in Earthquake Engineering), under Contract SB134107CQ0019, Earthquake Structural and Engineering Research, issued by the National Institute of Standards and Technology.
